Schuyler infuses pigment into wet plaster, allowing color to meld with texture. The result yields confident pieces in variations of tones, yet with a simplicity that balances the notes of texture in a passionate and thoughtful way.

John Schuyler was born in Long Island, New York. During early success as a business entrepreneur in Europe, Schuyler discovered Old World art methods and became inspired as an artist. He began to explore the art of painting using fresco techniques and drew from his interpretation of the colors, smells, and textures of the Tuscan countryside.

Schuyler's initial experimentation with fresco techniques had him consumed with the coarseness created by different applications of the plaster to his canvas. His experimentation led him to produce rich and dynamic consistencies. Over time, texture became paramount while the content and form became simplified, until color studies replaced traditional forms of content entirely.

Today, Schuyler creates by strenuously scraping acrylic paint and pigmented plaster from the surface of the linen in a style known as scraffito. The result is a powerful impression upon the viewer: rough texture alluding to a passionate physicality combined with simplicity of form reflecting a cool logic. The balance is both intense and alluring. Schulyer's paintings can be found at galleries across the U.S and in private collections around the world.
